Spanish Embroidery for Beginners - Basic Stitches
Are you looking for a guide to Spanish embroidery for beginners?
I have always associated Spanish embroidery with the art of hand embroidery.
I first learned about this lacy variation of cross stitch while admiring the sweet and easy sewing projects featured in an old book. A wonderful embroidery technique sewn on gingham fabric in a couple of lovely projects. I am so delighted with the effect that the Spanish embroidery stitch gives to these projects, that I couldn't help but share this beautiful stitch.
Below is some information about the stitch and a short tutorial so you can try this technique on your next embroidery project:
Spanish embroidery is a variation of cross stitch that is traditionally sewn onto fabric with mercerized perle cotton thread or braided embroidery thread. The squares on the fabric act as seam guides and help form a lacy pattern.
First, prepare the fabric. Use an embroidery hoop to help maintain even tension as you sew. Work the cross stitch, to add the woven details to the embroidery.
These are the basic stitches used in Spanish embroidery:
woven square
Square woven variation of the Spanish embroidery stitch.
Use the cross stitches to create the four corners of your woven square (as shown in the image above).
woven oval
Oval variation of the Spanish embroidery stitch.
By knitting the yarn diagonally through two cross stitches (as shown in the image above), you can create the oval variation of the Spanish stitch. Also, you can use a combination of the woven square and the woven oval in your projects as shown in the image above.
I can't wait to tear up some plaid fabric so I can take this embroidery stitch out for a spin! Even though this traditional print is the traditional fabric choice for Spanish embroidery, I'd love to try it on everything from stuffed embroidery but also floral embroidery.
Get inspired!
