How to embroider a vase of flowers

To embroider a vase of flowers, we can start by embroidering the leaves, stems and stamens with the stem stitch using color 877 with French knots at the tips of each stamen in color 278. In the embroidering of the petals in stem stitch we can use the Anchor Tapisserie wool.

To embroider the bands with the stem stitch through the vase, we used colors 433, 278 and 132.

Next, we filled the bottom of the vase with a diagonally worked crenellation and used its three blues with color 278 for the capture points. Its darkest blue color must be worked on first and then the medium blue followed by the light blue.

Care must be taken not to overstretch the stitches of the embroidery. Work a band of basque stitch down the center of the project and then outline the vase in stem stitch using color 433.

The stitches used to embroider

La basque stitch is a knotted line stitch that is very useful for creating a raised outline. It is a good alternative to the German knot buttonhole stitch. You can see it in the floral design where it is used to decorate the front of the vase. See how to knit it:

The crenellated bed is a way of making a decorative filling that is traditionally worked in four shades of a color that goes from light to dark or vice versa. In the diagrams here, the colors are quite different for clarity. This stitch is used on the bottom of the vase in the flower vase design shown to the side. See how to do it:
