Embroider a sunflower step by step
Today we present you a very simple and easy way to embroider a sunflower. A creative idea of Floral Stitch.
Materials to embroider a sunflower
- Fabric of your choice (cotton and linen are the most common options)
- Thread (twisted cotton) in various colors
- embroidery scissors
- Needle (Crewel needles are a good choice):
- water erasable marker
- Wooden embroidery hoop
Start embroidering the petals
Work the front petals first by sewing their edges in a lighter shade, using 1 strand of thread. Use the long and short stitch embroidery technique, and make sure that the direction of the stitches is correctly aligned (without the stitches crossing each other).
Take the thread and begin to fill the inside of the petal. Use long and short stitches, you will probably need two rows to cover the entire petal. Don't forget to use different stitches so there is some variety in their length.
Once you're done with the front petals, fill in the bottom ones, using the same long and short stitch embroidery technique. There's no need to make the stitches too long, instead use 2-3 rows of stitches to gradually cover the petals to the bottom. Make sure the fabric is not peeking out between the petals.
fill the center
When all the petals are ready, it's time to fill the center of our sunflower with the French knot. It makes 1 or 2 turns around the needle before inserting it into the fabric to get a good knot. You can also check French knot tips here.
Next, use the thread and sew the outer and center circle together, then fill in the rest of the space with darker French knots here and there between them.
Sew the stems and leaves
Take 2 strands of yarn and sew the sunflower stem in split stitch. For that, divide each previous point in the middle from below. When the needle emerges in the middle of a stitch after "breaking" it, make a new stitch and continue the line.
With the same thread, fill the leaves in parallel points: first half, then the other half. At the top, the angle of the stitches should be adjusted so that they blend smoothly into the vertical line at the tip.
Lastly, take 1 strand of yarn and sew a central vine to each leaf. You can use the same split stitch as before, or you can use the stem stitch: make a stitch, bring the needle up in the middle but to either side without splitting it. Then make the next point and repeat the previous step. It would be perfect if you start each new stitch where you finished the previous one.
And your sunflower embroidery design is ready! It's time to enjoy your shine!
