Embroider clothes by hand - Instructions
It is very easy to embroider clothes by hand. Start by drawing a design on a very thin sheet of paper (tracing paper works great for this). Or print a design on thin paper.
Next, cut around the design, leaving a bit of space around it, but not so much that you have a bulky area to sew. Then pin the paper to the clothing you want to embroider, in the place where you want the design to go. Again, this is another time when using tracing paper for your design is useful because you can see through it to determine the placement of the design, in relation to clothing pockets, seams, etc.
Next, thread a needle with embroidery floss, and then double or triple knot the end of a long piece of that floss (make it much longer than you think you'll need, and double the width if you want a bold/thick line). .
Then start at the bottom of the garment you are wearing, so that the knot is not visible, and hand-stitch the design through the garment and the paper that has your design on it.
Once the design is complete, tie a double or triple knot on the inside of the garment once more to secure the remaining end. Then you can tear the paper by hand and it's ready to use. Be careful though, don't let the embroidery floss aggravate the design or cause it to fray or bunch up in any area.
What points to use?
I choose these embroidery stitches, which for me are the easiest and most basic to embroider clothes by hand:
continuous stitch
This stitch is also known as the straight stitch and is the most basic of the embroidery stitches. For a running stitch, push the needle through one side and then back through the other side, leaving a small gap between each stitch.
back stitch
A back stitch will create a solid line, which is perfect for the tracing paper design technique. To create a back stitch, start with a single stitch. Then skip the length of the first stitch to the second, and then backtrack to join the second stitch to the first, going through the end of the last stitch.
split stitch
This is also a good stitch for embroider designs on clothes. For a split stitch, create a single stitch. Then push the needle through the middle of the stitch you just made and create a new stitch. Repeat that process over and over again.
