How to Do the Wonderful Stem Stitch

Today I am going to teach you the stem stitch, which is a hand embroidery stitch for beginners. You will need cotton embroidery thread, linen or any other fabric, a needle and an embroidery needle.

Also known as crewel stitch, shank stitch, or shank stitch. This is my favorite hand embroidery stitch because it is so versatile and so attractive. It is one of the easiest embroidery stitches to make and perhaps also one of the first stitches any embroidery beginner will learn.

Tips to work this point

Just remember that you must introduce the needle to the desired length and lift it at the previous stitch. You will get the point better with a video tutorial. Please check below.
Always pull the thread on the other side of the stitch when inserting the needle.

What is this point for?

Once you learn this stitch, there is no limit to how this stitch can be used. From dresses to quilts to pillowcases, this stitch can be worked into just about anything. Motifs, bags, dresses, you can fill any design with this stitch. This stitch is perfect for rods, curved lines, etc.
Silk thread can be used and a beautiful design can also be made using this stitch for a wedding dress.

Stem Stitch Variations

Once you've mastered the plain bar stitch, there are several decorative variations of the stitch you can practice, one of which would be the joined bar stitch. The fitted rib has a slightly different and higher look and is based on a rib and then a whip stitch is worked on this row.

To finish the stitch you basically create a knot with the embroidery thread on the other bottom to secure it.
Ribbon embroidery, usually done with soft silk ribbons, adds a wonderful textured dimension to your embroidered fabric. It looks classy and has an old world charm associated with it. Flowers made from embroidered ribbons look wonderful on dresses, bags, and pillowcases.

Choose a comfortable fabric with a uniform texture. Linen, dupioni silk, velvet, denim, cotton brocade and moiré are ideal for working this stitch. The fabric must be hooped in an embroidery hoop.

Ribbon embroidery with stem stitch

Ribbon embroidery, usually done with soft silk ribbons, adds a wonderful textured dimension to your embroidered fabric.

You must use a chenille needle to embroider the ribbons. Although silk works best, you can also use tapestry (blunt end for weaving stitches)

For this project, 7mm silk ribbon beautifully fills in a detailed embroidery pattern.

You can also try ribbon embroidery with simple embroidery stitches like the daisy stitch, rod stitch, blanket, and French knot. You can use points individually or in combination with others. To embroider with machine tape, you should consult the guides and manuals specific to your model of embroidery machine.

Color is an important part of your decision on which flowers to have. Petals around 15mm (1,5cm) long are ideal.
